Things a Melburnian has googled at least once

My Vivid Melbourne
Things a Melburnian has googled at least once

Well, as much as you consider yourself as a local expert, just sometimes you tend to google up somethings, well at least you have done few times. Let’s see the points.

  1. WEATHER CHECK IN MELBOURNE

Nobody denies how many times a day we check this, a summer festival can turn out to be rain festival in a split second.

2. OPEN HOURS OF QUEEN VIC

Always remember that Queen Vic market is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. We always tend to forget that and be at the corner of the Elizabeth Street, under that big mural of cows.

3. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WALK DOWN SWANSTON STREET

Passing by the wandering tourists, slow walkers and passing those people with heavy shopping bags is an ultimate challenge. So, we always tend to google up to see how long it takes to walk down Swanston Street, don’t we?

4. WHY DO TRAMS HAVE SAND IN THEIR WALLS?

Sanding is used in tram operations to improve adhesion in both braking and traction. In braking, it makes sure that the train stops as soon as possible. Said is dropped on the rail in front of the driving wheels in slippery and wet conditions.

5. HOW DO TRAMS CHANGE LANES?

Next time you are on a tram, check to see that the driver flicks a knob on the dash. That’s the mechanism for changing the points. When the switch is activated a small electrical circuit in the track picks up the change and resets the points accordingly. How cool yea?

6. HOW DO YOU DO A HOOK TURN?

A hook turn is a right hand turn you make from the left-hand lane. That’s crazy if you are new here. But you get used to it over time.

7. P-TURN HODDLE STREET

The P Turn allows the driver to make a right turn by going through the intersection, make a U turn into the left lane, then make a left turn. To go right from Hoddle Street onto Johnston Street, you will travel through the intersection, do a U-turn, then turn left.

8. ROOFTOP BARS/ BEST PLACES TO EAT NEAR ME

Ah, this will score huge, we do this every time we go out, don’t we?

9. WHAT’S THAT GREEN BUBBLY BUILDING ON LA TROBE STREET

Well, that’s city’s most popular universities, RMIT. Dated back from 1912, it is now called the “large green clouds of tiles” for a very unknown reason.

10. MELBOURNE AIRPORT TRAINS

Currently, the connections between Melbourne Airport and the railway network is made with coach and airport buses. Guess this train link to the airport will not establish for many more years.

11. WHY DO WE HAVE A PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR GRAND FINAL DAY OF MELBOURNE CUP?

When in 2015, Daniel Andrews introduced the public holiday for Melbourne Cup, he suggests it’s a great opportunity to be with family and friends while enjoying the Australia’s national game.

12. METRO TUNNEL FINISH DATE

This $11 billion Metro Tunnel is expected to be completed in 2025.

13. CAN YOU SWIM IN THE YARRA RIVER?

It’s a fair point to be inquisitive on this, it’s a beautiful setup, an ideal scene to jump into the water and test yea? Well, unfortunately it’s illegal to swim in the Yarra River south of Gipps Street in Abbotsford.

14. ARE THERE DEAD BODIES IN THE YARRA RIVER?

We’ve head quiet a lot of incidents on this, but no confirmed number of demises in total yet.

15. WHERE ARE THE WAVES AT ST. KILDA BEACH?

St Kilda Beach in Dunedin is an exposed beach break that usually has waves the best wind direction is from the north northwest.

16. IS IT SAFE TO SWIM AT ANY MELBOURNE BEACHES?

Make sure you always have a swim where there are lifeguards at sight.

17. LATE NIGHT BARS AND EATERIES OPEN NOW!

Melbourne got an array of late-night bars and eatery joints up until 5.00am or even 7.00am. So, yes, we always google it up when we are out with friends on a Friday night, don’t we?

Let’s say it! Share away…..
